A reward in a glass

The deep amber colour was a joy in its own right. The smell reminded me of bashed oranges rolling down a dusty street in Seville; or maybe a Scottish breakfast with marmalade on toast. There was definite opulence and country house grandeur – polished antiques and leather sofas (maybe an Old Master on the wall). With time, the sweetness of dried figs and crème brulée began to dominate.

The palate was rich, sweet and full-on in flavour – egg custard tarts (pastel de nata), Christmas cake and crystallised orange slices dipped in dark chocolate; Grand Marnier or Muscat Fleur d’Orange came to mind – and it felt so pretty in the mouth I almost didn’t want to swallow it – almost! The finish was old dry Oloroso  and manuka honey. A dessert whisky; a reward in a glass; go to the top of the class.
